unopost

A letter of demand asks someone to pay what they owe, or put something right, by a date, before you take it to a court or tribunal. A posted letter is harder to ignore than an email, and Australia Post's tracking records its progress through the post and when it was delivered.

Write the letter yourself, or with a lawyer, and upload it as a PDF, Word file or photo. We print it exactly as uploaded and post it: $10 by regular post, or $20 by Express Post, usually the next business day. We don't write letters or give legal advice.

What to put in a letter of demand

  • Who you are, and what's owed: the amount, what it's for and when it fell due.
  • A date to pay by. Many people give 7 or 14 days.
  • How to pay: your bank details or another way.
  • What you'll do if it isn't paid, such as applying to your state's court or tribunal.
  • Copies of the invoice, quote or agreement, in the same upload after the letter.

Keep it factual. A letter of demand mustn't harass or mislead, or be made to look like a court document. Your state's legal aid commission or small business commissioner has free templates.

A record it arrived

If it goes further, you may have to show the letter was sent and received.

Tracking, on every letter
We email you the tracking number the day it's posted. Australia Post's record shows its first scan and the day it was delivered.
Signature on delivery, $6 extra
Handed to a person and signed for, never left in the letterbox: a record of who received it. With regular post that's Registered post, $16 in all.
Your own copy
Keep the file you uploaded and our email with the tracking number. Together they show what was sent, when and to where.

Whether a record is accepted for a legal purpose is up to whoever asks for it.

How long it takes

Pay by 2:30pm Melbourne time on a business day and it's posted that day, otherwise the next business day. Express Post usually arrives the next business day within Australia Post's network; regular post takes 3 to 7 business days.
