What the ATO asks for

The ATO asks that you write only as a primary or authorised contact, and include your tax file number or ABN, your full name, date of birth, address and phone number, and your signature. Paper tax returns go to a different box from other letters. If you live overseas, the ATO's address for a tax return is GPO Box 9845, Sydney NSW 2001.

How long it takes

Pay by 2:30pm Melbourne time on a business day and it's posted that day, otherwise the next business day. Express Post usually arrives the next business day within Australia Post's network; regular post takes 3 to 7 business days.

Those are Australia Post's estimates, not a guarantee. Every letter is tracked, and we email you the tracking number once it's lodged. If a due date is a day or two away, use Express Post, or an online service where the ATO offers one.

Posting to the ATO: questions

What is the postal address for the ATO?

For a paper tax return: Australian Taxation Office, GPO Box 9845, then your capital city and its postcode, such as Sydney NSW 2001. For other letters: GPO Box 9990, addressed the same way. That's what the ATO's website listed in October 2026.

Can I post to the ATO from overseas?

Yes. Upload from anywhere and pay by card. We print and post it in Australia as a domestic letter, with no international postage.

Is Unopost part of the ATO?
