A letter with a stamp on it isn't tracked. To follow a letter in Australia, it has to go in one of Australia Post's tracked envelopes: a letter with tracking, Registered Post or Express Post.
Prices and inclusions are from Australia Post's letter with tracking and Registered Post pages, checked on 26 October 2026. Prices include GST.

Letter with tracking: from $5.85
A prepaid envelope with a tracking number, delivered to the letterbox like any other letter. The small one, for a DL envelope up to 125g, is $5.85. The C5, up to 500g, is $8.10. It includes compensation up to $100, and nobody signs for it.
Registered Post: from $8.15
Tracked, and signed for on delivery. A small prepaid envelope, up to 250g, is $8.15, and a B4, up to 500g, is $10.50. Compensation up to $100 is included.
Two extras are paid at the post office: delivery confirmation for $2.95, and person-to-person delivery, which hands it only to the person named, for $6.50.
Hand it over the counter rather than dropping it in a street posting box. That gets you proof of posting.
Express Post: from $9.45
Tracked, and the fastest: the next business day within the Express Post network. A DL envelope is $9.45, and signature on delivery is $2.95 extra.
Without the envelope or the post office
Every letter we post is tracked. Upload a PDF, Word file or photo and we print it, put it in one of those Australia Post envelopes and lodge it. The tracking number is emailed to you once it's posted.
