A stamp for a small letter in Australia costs $1.85, up from $1.70 on 1 September 2026. Anything bigger or faster costs more.

Here's what Australia Post charges for each option, as listed on its website on 26 October 2026, and what it costs to have the letter printed and posted for you instead. Prices include GST.

A small letter: $1.85

Australia Post's basic postage rate for an ordinary letter within Australia is $1.85. It rose 15 cents, from $1.70, on 1 September 2026.

To get it there faster, add a Priority label for $1.30, making $3.15 in all. Australia Post says Priority takes up to 3 business days within the same state and up to 4 interstate.

Concession stamps are unchanged at $3 for a booklet of five, for eligible Australian Government concession card holders with a MyPost concession account.

An A4 or A5 envelope: from $3.70

A small letter is up to 130mm x 240mm, 5mm thick and 250g: a DL envelope, with A4 pages folded in three. Anything bigger, up to 260mm x 360mm, 20mm thick and 500g, is a large letter. That covers a C5 envelope, which takes A5 pages or A4 folded once, and a C4 envelope, which takes A4 flat.

How many stamps a letter needs

One $1.85 stamp for a small letter. Two for a large letter up to 125g, and three up to 250g. From 250g to 500g the postage is $9, which five stamps more than cover.

How long it takes

  • Priority: up to 3 business days within the same state, up to 4 interstate.
  • Express Post: next business day within the Express Post network when posted before 4pm. The network covers the capital cities and some major centres, but not Darwin, and in Perth only the CBD.
